intermission

her body of work has less to do with design than fine art (she is a painter, after all), but we love how julie mehretu incorporates street grids and maps in the underlayers of her complex, dynamic paintings.  the overall picture may look abstracted, but in grounding her work with topography, she makes a quiet yet bold statement about the boundaries of society.
